The Palace Waltz

from A Window in Darkness by Spingere

/

about

An important and happy event in my parents’ lives was a dance. It was at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire and they were dancing to a well-known dance orchestra. I was about seven and I had never seen them look so smart and smiley. After dad died my mum would talk about this night and dance with her invisible husband. When she turned ninety I researched the event and organised a trip to where the dance was held and spent a long time looking around the room before walking over to me and saying, “this is the wrong room.” From there on the memory of the night fragmented and fell apart for her.
